It takes ten seconds. You slide it in, pivot it slightly, and suddenly an ordinary ponytail becomes something elegant. The French hair comb — peigne à chignon — has been the quiet secret of Parisian hairstyling for decades.
Yet for many people, it remains mysterious. How exactly do the teeth lock? Where do you place it? Does it work on thick hair? On curly hair? Can one comb hold a full updo all day?
At MC Davidian, we have been handcrafting French hair combs in France for over 40 years — from cellulose acetate and gold-plated metal, set with Swarovski® rhinestones. This is our complete guide to using them.
What Is a French Hair Comb?
A French hair comb is a decorative accessory — not a grooming tool. Its curved row of teeth is designed to grip a section of hair and stay in place, while its decorative top — set with rhinestones, carved from acetate, or finished in gold-plated metal — sits visibly in the style.
It differs from a regular comb in every important way:
- Material: cellulose acetate or metal, never raw plastic — both flexible and gripping.
- Shape: gently curved to follow the scalp contour.
- Purpose: to hold and decorate simultaneously — the accessory is the hairstyle.
- Origin: rooted in French haute coiffure, adopted globally by women who prefer elegance over effort.
How to Choose the Right French Hair Comb
Before the technique, the tool. A comb that is too small, too rigid, or too smooth will slip. Getting the right match for your hair type makes all the difference.
By Hair Type
Fine or short hair
Choose a MM (Moyenne Modèle, 7.5–8 cm) metal comb — the thinner teeth glide into fine hair without bulk. The Rock’n Roll Metal Comb MM and Holiday Comb MM are ideal choices.
Normal to thick hair
A GM (Grande Modèle, 9 cm) cellulose acetate comb provides the width and flex to grip a generous volume. The Groovy Hair Comb GM and Handmade Hair Comb 10 Wavy Teeth perform beautifully.
Curly or textured hair
Wider-spaced teeth in acetate are essential — they grip curl clusters without snagging. The Feathers Brillant Golden Comb MM and Handmade Hair Comb Interlaced Pin are excellent for curls and waves.
By Size
| Size | Length | Best for | Recommended styles |
|---|---|---|---|
| PM | 4–5 cm | Fine hair, small sections | Braided accent, fringe hold |
| MM | 7.5–8 cm | Normal hair | Side sweep, half-up, ponytail finish |
| GM | 8.8–9 cm | Thick or long hair | Chignon hold, full updo |
| TGM | 17–19 wavy teeth | Very thick or long hair | Grand updo, formal occasions |
By Material
Cellulose acetate — our material of choice. It has a natural micro-texture that grips the hair shaft without pulling. It is also hypoallergenic, flexible enough to resist breakage, and warm to the touch. Unlike injected plastic, cellulose acetate is hand-polished and develops a beautiful patina over time.
Metal combs (gold- or nickel-plated) have very fine, close-set teeth. They are ideal for fine or straight hair that needs a precise, secure hold. Our Metal Combs collection includes the Rock’n Roll Brillant Metal Comb, the Feathers Brillant Golden Comb, the Greek Brillant Golden Comb, the Renaissance Sparkling Comb and the Coral Sparkling Comb.
Classic cellulose acetate combs — the Groovy, Holiday and Handmade series — offer the purest French hair comb experience: all handmade in France, non-allergenic, rust-resistant, and beautifully simple or lightly set with Swarovski® stones.
6 Ways to Wear a French Hair Comb
From everyday elegance to formal grand updos — master every technique.
1. The Classic Side Sweep
Best comb: MM or GM — Groovy Hair Comb GM, Holiday Bright Comb MM
Hair type: All hair types
Time: 30 seconds
- Part your hair to one side and smooth the top section back behind your ear.
- Hold the comb with teeth pointing downward, angled at roughly 45°.
- Place the teeth against the hair at the temple, touching the scalp.
- Push inward firmly, sliding the teeth under the hair toward the scalp.
- Pivot the comb upward so the decorative bar faces outward. It locks instantly.
2. The Half-Up French Style
Best comb: MM or GM — Feathers Brillant Golden Comb MM, Greek Brillant Golden Comb MM
Hair type: Normal to long hair
Time: 1 minute
- Gather the top two-thirds of your hair from the crown to just above the ears.
- Twist this section once loosely at the back of the head.
- Insert the comb horizontally through the twist, teeth pointing down, from one side.
- Push through until the teeth emerge on the other side, gripping the hair underneath.
- Fan the remaining hair over the comb and adjust the decorative top as desired.
3. The Chignon Hold
Best comb: GM — Groovy Hair Comb GM, Handmade Hair Comb 10 Wavy Teeth
Hair type: Medium to thick hair
Time: 2 minutes
- Create a low or mid-height chignon with a thin elastic, kept loose.
- Hold the comb with teeth pointing upward, pressed against the base of the chignon.
- Slide into the bun from underneath, pushing teeth upward through the hair.
- Pivot the decorative bar downward to lock so the comb rests visibly at the top.
- Add a second comb on the opposite side for symmetry on thick hair.
4. The Braided Updo Accent
Best comb: MM — Greek Brillant Golden Comb MM, Coral Sparkling Comb MM
Hair type: All hair types
Time: 30 seconds (comb insertion only)
- Complete your braid or twisted updo first and pin it loosely.
- Select a smaller MM comb for a cleaner fit between braid sections.
- Slide the comb teeth-first horizontally through the braid, anchoring it to the hair beneath.
- The decorative bar faces outward, adding sparkle to the style without adding bulk.
5. The Ponytail Finish
Best comb: GM — Holiday Bright Comb MM, Renaissance Sparkling Comb MM
Hair type: Normal to thick, medium-length or long hair
Time: 1 minute
- Secure your ponytail with an elastic as usual.
- Wrap a small section of hair around the elastic to conceal it.
- Insert a GM comb just above the elastic at the base of the ponytail, teeth pointing down.
- The decorative bar frames the ponytail with a jewelled arch — instantly elevating the look.
6. The Sparkling Grand Updo
Best comb: MM or GM — Renaissance Sparkling Comb MM, Feathers Brillant Golden Comb MM
Hair type: All hair types for a festive, high-sparkle look
Time: 2–3 minutes
- Create a loose, voluminous updo or low chignon using pins or an elastic.
- Insert the “Very Full” Swarovski comb at the crown or side of the bun, teeth pointing inward.
- Angle it so the full rhinestone surface catches the light from the front.
- Add a second comb on the opposite side for a symmetrical, red-carpet look.
- Finish with a light-hold spray to keep flyaways in place without masking the shine.

Pro Styling Tips
★ Grip Booster
Mist your hair with a light texturising spray before inserting the comb. The added texture gives the teeth extra purchase.
★ The Twist Lock
Always twist the section of hair you’re capturing slightly before inserting the comb. A twisted section locks the teeth far better than flat hair.
★ Match Comb to Occasion
Simple acetate comb for daywear; rhinestone “Very Full” comb for evenings. The decoration should match the light — subtle for morning, dazzling for candlelight.
★ Layer Combs
Use two combs on either side of a chignon for a symmetrical, architectural look. Mix sizes: a GM to anchor, a PM for decoration above.
★ Warm Tones vs Cool
Gold-plated combs complement warm brown, auburn and chestnut hair. Nickel-plated or crystal-clear combs are stunning against black, platinum blonde or cool ash hair.
★ Metal Comb for Fine Hair
The close-set piano-wire teeth of the Rock’n Roll Metal Comb series grip fine, silky hair that acetate combs can’t always hold — the technique invented by hairdresser Antoine in 1970s Japan.
Care & Maintenance
A MC Davidian comb, properly cared for, lasts for years. Cellulose acetate ages beautifully — it develops a subtle patina rather than yellowing like plastic. Here is how to keep yours in perfect condition.
Daily Rinse
Cold water only — hot water warps acetate. Pat dry immediately with a soft cloth.
Deep Clean
Mild shampoo + soft toothbrush between the teeth. Rinse thoroughly. Air-dry flat — never use a hair dryer.
Rhinestones
Never soak Swarovski®-set combs. Wipe with a lightly damp cloth only — soaking loosens the adhesive behind the stones.
Storage
Store flat in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Prolonged UV exposure can fade acetate colours over time.

FAQ — French Hair Combs
How do you use a French hair comb?
Hold the comb with its teeth pointing downward. Angle it at roughly 45° against the hair section you want to hold, then slide it firmly toward the scalp — teeth first — until it locks in place. For a side sweep, insert at the temple and push inward. For an updo, insert at the base of the chignon and pivot upward. Full step-by-step in the six techniques above.
What is the difference between a French hair comb and a regular comb?
A French hair comb (peigne à chignon) is a decorative accessory designed to be worn in the hair as a style holder, not a grooming tool. It has a curved row of teeth that grip the hair and a decorative top — often set with rhinestones or crafted from hand-polished cellulose acetate. A regular comb is a utilitarian grooming tool.
Are French hair combs good for thick hair?
Yes — particularly GM (Grande Modèle, 9 cm) combs made from cellulose acetate. The slightly flexible acetate teeth grip thick hair without snapping, while the longer comb length captures more volume. For very thick hair, use two GM combs placed symmetrically on either side of an updo. Spanish TGM combs (17 wavy teeth) are the top choice for very thick or long hair.
How do I keep a French hair comb from slipping?
Three techniques: (1) Twist the hair section slightly before inserting — the twist gives the teeth extra grip. (2) Insert the comb against the direction of hair growth, then pivot it back — this locks the teeth between the hair layers. (3) Choose a cellulose acetate comb: its natural micro-texture grips hair far better than smooth plastic.
What size French hair comb do I need?
PM (4–5 cm): fine hair or decorative braided accents. MM (7.5–8 cm): normal hair, side sweeps or half-up styles. GM (9 cm): thick or long hair in chignons and updos. TGM (17–19 wavy teeth): very thick or long hair and formal occasions — these are our Spanish combs.
How do I clean and care for a French hair comb?
Rinse under cold water after each use and pat dry — never use hot water or a hair dryer, as heat can warp cellulose acetate. For deeper cleaning, use a drop of mild shampoo on a soft toothbrush, gently scrub between the teeth, rinse thoroughly and air-dry flat. Hand-set Swarovski® rhinestone combs should not be soaked — wipe with a damp cloth only. Store flat away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
